Along the Tiber River

rom stadtfuehrer - rome guide - entlang des tibers - tiberinsel

By the end of the 19th century, when the walls were built along the Tiber, the river was an important landscape of the city- it was navigable, surrounded by many houses that were built right at the water, it was bathed and fished in it and he led drinkable water. This walk begins at the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, a church of the Greek community in the 6th century. In this area there were early cattle, pig, fish and vegetable markets, the Forum Boarium, Suarium, Piscatorum and Holitorium. Walking by the Marcello Theater leads us through the former ghetto.A visit to the synagogue, with its richly decorated, is connected with a visit to the Museo del Tempio, where many historical objects and certificates are issued to the Jewish community of Rome. In the ghetto some sweet Jewish-Roman tradition delicacies can be tasted. After crossing the Tiber Island and on our way to Castel Sant’Angelo, we try the famous “Grattachecca”- a typical roman soft drink. Our last leg of the walk takes us to the Altar of Augustan peace.
